Modern state of populations of a rare species of Ukrainian flora, Carlina onopordifolia Bess. ex Szaf, Kulcz. et Pawł (Asteraceae), in the Western Volhynia-Podillya is considered. Analysis of the age structure of the Carlina onopordifolia populations in western Volhynia-Podillya shows qualitative differentiation depending on the current state of natural habitats. Homeostatic populations with complete ontogenetic states prevail in antropogenically undisturbed habitats in meadow steppes. Sylvicultural plantations of Pinus sylvestris on steppe slopes cause degradation of the Carlina onopordifolia populations. Recommendations for improvement of the protection of Carlina onopordifolia in western Volhynia- Podillya are proposed.
